Confirmed: Spammers Going to Hell

I know I’m not the only one who looks at a piece of spam email and says, “Who reads and clicks on this stuff?”  This interesting article on Macworld answered that question as a former spammer is interviewed about the shady spamming industry.

“Ed” wisely didn’t reveal his full name, but said that he knew that he is “going to hell,” and that he is “what people hate about the Internet.”  I can agree with the last part, but we’ll leave the condition of his soul up for another debate.

What struck me most was that the spam industry mostly feeds off of people addicted to prescription drugs.  That’s a sad way to make a living, and I don’t know that there is much difference between that and joining forces with a drug pusher on the street in order to rake in a commission on every sale.

But save some blame for the addicts.  “The ultimate unsolvable problem is users, who continue to buy products marketed by spam, making the industry possible,” says Ed.  The small percentage of addicts who click on this crap keep the spam business in business.  So once again, I am confounded by the human capacity for stupidity.
